Global – 167,500,000/3,500,000; USA – 33,000,000/588,400 The situation continues to get “out of control” with regard to the press reports concerning my “flip flopping” concerning the theory of the origin of the virus. I had always said that the very highly likelihood is that the virus originated naturally from an animal reservoir jumping to a human. However, over the past couple of days given the amount of speculation about the possibility of a lab leak I have been saying that no one is 100% certain of the origin including me and so I am calling for a thorough investigation. This is backed by Andy Slavitt as well as a number of other government officials. Calling for an investigation is merely to put to rest the extraordinary amount of speculation and conspiracy theories. However, this is being interpreted as Fauci flip flopping again. The far right is really amazing in their distortion of reality. • We had our Hearing today before the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee chaired by senator Patty Murray with ranking minority Roy Blount. As expected, several Republican senators got a bit snarky with me asking questions about the origins of COVID-19. In particular senator Kennedy (R-LA). In addition, Sens. Braun, Rubio and Lindsey Graham all asked questions with a hint of the conspiracy theory that somehow the Chinese let the virus escape from a lab and possibly the NIH inadvertently contributed to this by funding the lab to do research on coronavirus. This type of conspiracy theory is getting very hot and heavy of late with multiple publications promoting all sorts of theories. • One of the most recent theories is that President Biden suppressed the investigation of the Chinese. President Biden came out with a statement today explaining his position on all this. Here it is: • Statement by President Joe Biden on the Investigation into the Origins of COVID-19 • May 26, 2021 • Statements and Releases • Back in early 2020, when COVID-19 emerged, I called for the CDC to get access to China to learn about the virus so we could fight it more effectively. The failure to get our inspectors on the ground in those early months will always hamper any investigation into the origin of COVID-19. Nevertheless, shortly after I became President, in March, I had my National Security Advisor task the Intelligence Community to prepare a report on their most up-to-date analysis of the origins of COVID-19, including whether it emerged from human contact with an infected animal or from a laboratory accident. I received that report earlier this month, and asked for additional followup. As of today, the U.S. Intelligence Community has “coalesced around two likely scenarios” but has not reached a definitive conclusion on this question. Here is their current position: “while two elements in the IC leans toward the former scenario and one leans more toward the latter – each with low or moderate confidence – the majority of elements do not believe there is sufficient information to assess one to be more likely than the other.” I have now asked the Intelligence Community to redouble their efforts to collect and analyze information that could bring us closer to a definitive conclusion, and to report back to me in 90 days. As part of that report, I have asked for areas of further inquiry that may be required, including specific questions for China. I have also asked that this effort include work by our National Labs and other agencies of our government to augment the Intelligence Community’s efforts. And I have asked the Intelligence Community to keep Congress fully apprised of its work.
